Day 3 Dharamsala to Udhampur

Day 3 (July 10, 2012) Dharamsala to Udhampur

We took a detour for Udhampur at Dayala Chak. It was shorter by 40kms I guess compared to usual NH1 through Samba.
We took almost the same time but we thought it was better than boring NH1 🙂
Total distance was around 220kms.

Could have gone to Patnitop (which is 45kms from udhampur on the way towards Srinagar) and stayed there but we decided to stay at Udhampur itself as I knew a nice place, which I stayed in my last trip to himalayas. And in patnitop we would have to search for a place which might be tiring since it is a tourist destination.

Next day's destination was Srinagar which was around 230kms from Udhampur

Day 7: Leh to Pagal Naala

So again back to the road. Today we had planned for reaching Pangong Tso which was around 102Kms from Leh. The biggest hurdle for reaching there was the dreaded stream called "Pagal Naala". this stream, in fact all the streams in Himalayas, would be going through the rideable roads and its characteristics will be, you can cross the stream with ease in the mornings till noon around 2 o clock after which the it would be impossible to cross it. The reason being the snow in the mountain peaks would have melted by noon which will inundate even a small stream. Hence we had to cross the Pagal Nala before 12 o clock. Keeping this in mind we wanted to start early. Even if the 100kms sounds very easy to do but it is not easy in the mountains to cover even this small distance. Day 6, 9th July: Kargil to Leh (A different route) So a new day a new destination and I am loving it . Got up early packed up things, spoke to the guest house owner so that I can pay him and start my journey. I casually asked him whether the roads till Leh are good or bad. He said there are construction works going on the route before Lamayuru. New road was being laid and they were using explosives to clear out the way which meant if I reach the place at a wrong time I could get stuck for hours there.
